M.I.A. Splits From Her Fiance

Singer Reportedly Goes 'six weeks without seeing' Her Son

Rapper M.I.A. has called it quits with her fiancé, Benjamin Bronfman, the New York Daily News reported.

The London-born musician, 36, reportedly split from Bronfman after living a "separate life" from her long-term partner, with whom she has a son.

According to the Daily News, M.I.A. spends the bulk of her time in the U.K. while Bronfman, 29, lives in New York. A source told the newspaper that M.I.A. hardly stays in New York and Benjamin's mother, Sherry Bronfman, is helping him take care of their son, Ikhyd Bronfman.

M.I.A., born Mathangi Arulpragasam, "sometimes goes six weeks without seeing" Ikhyd, the source said.

M.I.A. and Benjamin Bronfman met in New York in 2008. The pair gave birth to their son, who turns three on Saturday, in 2009.

Bronfman, an environmentalist and former guitarist for the punk reggae band The Exit, is the son of Seagram heir Edgar Bronfman Jr.

M.I.A., who was born in Hounslow, London, but spent some of her childhood in the then civil war torn country of Sri Lanka, has previously spoken publicly about marrying Bronfman but having to deal with immigration issues first.

The controversial rapper told Fader magazine in a 2010 interview that she would not simply marry Bronfman for her green card.

"That's what they want me to do, but I'm not going to lose my integrity for that ****... I actually want a nice wedding," she said. "I'm not going to blow that. If they're gonna kick me out, it's going to be a fight, it's an important fight to have."

But M.I.A. may have to think about her severed ties a little later. She is currently facing criticism following her Super Bowl performance with Madonna and Nicki Minaj on Sunday night where she gave the camera the middle finger.

The three ladies were performing the new song "Give Me All Your Luvin," from Madonna's upcoming album when the rapper offered NBC cameras the one finger salute.

NBC has already apologized to viewers for the otherwise entertaining half-time show, but some speculate that they may still be subject to a fine.

According to the Sun magazine, Madonna was very displeased with M.I.A.'s gesture.

"Madonna wasn't impressed. She prides herself on professionalism. M.I.A. did nothing similar in rehearsals. Nobody knew she was going to pull this stunt," a source told the paper. "Madonna wanted to put on a world-beating performance. But everyone ended up talking about this girl's middle finger."
