'Boy Meets World' Spinoff 'Girl Meets World' Picked Up by Disney Channel
The "Boy Meets World" spinoff "Girl Meets World" is officially part of the Disney family as of June 17. The Disney Channel made the announcement Monday and said production will begin this summer, with the show airing in 2014.
"'Boy Meets World' and its story of adolescent self-discovery resonated with an entire generation of tweens," Adam Bonnett, Disney Channel executive vice president said in a statement. "In the same way audiences fell in love with Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence, we look forward to introducing our viewers to their daughter ... and building a memorable connection with a whole new generation of fans."
The show will be set in New York and feature actress Rowan Blanchard as Riley Matthews, the daughter of the original show's main characters, Corey and Topanga. Blanchard previously starred in "Spy Kids," according to Us magazine.
"It's exciting and flattering that people are still so excited about the show after all this time," Ben Savage, who originally played Corey, told Rolling Stone magazine.
"No one wanted to really cash in, if you will, too early, or no one really wanted to do something that was going to be cheesy," he continued. "We're really working hard and doing everything we can to make sure that this is going to be something special and funny, and hopefully it'll make new memories for a new generation."
It has been revealed that beloved "Boy Meets World" principal, Mr. Feeney, played by William Daniels, will be returning for a cameo, but not all is certain about Rider Strong, who played Corey's best friend Shawn Hunter.
"I'm very hesitant, and that's why I'm not fully 100 percent in yet," Strong told TV Guide about his returning to the show. "I don't think anyone from the show expected the response to be so positive, so I'm excited, but I'm going to wait and see. If it's a good situation, I feel like I owe it to the fans."
